When assessing the best false eyelashes, consider the spectrum, which ranges from more-is-more falsies to barely detectable, maybe-she’s-born-with-it options. My experience is with the latter. Before reality TV stars and TikTok informed our modern makeup techniques, I spent hours watching YouTube videos to attempt to perfect the false lash application technique. Despite being a visual learner, I could never quite master getting the inner corner of my lash to stay put so I moved on to the world of half lashes and clusters. Lo and behold, my problem was solved!

At first, I would cut Ardell’s demi wispie in half and only apply it to the outer corner. It became my pre-fête ritual for special occasions; I loved the look and how it made me feel more glamorous with my round face’s features emphasized like a cute cartoon. But now, thanks to a host of innovations in the category—self-stick lashes are where it’s at!—I no longer need to cut falsies in half, and I’ve said goodbye to lash glue entirely.

No matter where you are in your own lash journey, it’s understandable why you might want proceed with caution—like winged liner or the perfect cut crease eyeshadow, lash application can be intimidating. Plus, there’s a matter of personal preference: If you aren’t into the heavy caterpillar versions that blink back at you while watching The Bachelor or the hyper-edited Insta-baddie glam, you might think lashes aren’t for you: too hard to achieve, too much of an effort, too “done up” looking. But consider this: You just might not have met the right lash for you yet.

With my enduring passion for false lashes, two questions always rack my brain: What are the best false eyelashes for at-home application, and what are the most effortless application techniques? Below, makeup experts share their current favorites with me, plus their top tips for a seamless application.

How to Choose False Lashes

When it comes to choosing the best false lashes, celebrity makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez says it’s all about personal preference. “Think less about matching a false lash to suit your natural eye shape and more about the look you’re trying to achieve,” Gonzalez tells Vogue, encouraging beauty lovers to explore what lash styles they like best. “I have go-tos for all my clients depending on their preference—for example, Ashley Park loves a strip lash for a doll-eyed look.”

According to Ardell lash expert Jade Munson, for classic strip lashes, the secret to perfecting them is picking a set that opens eyes, like those that just enhanced the outer corners, and trimming the band to fit your personal eye shape. Whether you prefer a rounded, mod open-eyed look, or a slinky vixen eye—there’s something for everyone.

How to Apply False Lashes

In the case of strip lashes, Munson recommends that you do all of your makeup except for mascara, then apply a thin line of glue along the band (Duo is recognized as a drugstore industry standard) and wait a few seconds for it to get tacky. Press the lash band onto your line until it stays, and finish with mascara.

For those less enthused about the idea of using glue but love a good eyeliner moment, lashes that connect to magnetic eyeliner provide a two-for-one benefit: eyeliner that holds your lashes in place.

For a truly precise application, Gonzalez prefers to reach for cluster lashes and recommends self-stick lashes for anyone from fellow beauty experts to newbies. “It’s so freaking easy and quick! Since the lash is applied below your natural lashes, the clusters blend seamlessly, removing the appearance of a lash band,” says Gonzalez. “Self-stick takes away so many steps—all you need to do is squeeze the false lash in place after you’ve curled your natural lashes and put on mascara.”

As a pro tip, Gonzalez recommends always starting your false lashes about three hairs inward from the outer corner of your eye for a lifted look rather than a “sad droopy lash.” She also advises reaching for a tweezer or lash applicator for the most precision and ease in placing your faux lash of choice.
